6 On The Square

Dear Friends:

Because you need a holiday break, or precisely because for you the holidays mean beautiful music, we have the very special Holiday Whiz Bang with the Sloan Wainwright Band on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 7:30 pm. It's one of our most highly anticipated shows of the season for two reasons: we love the holidays, and we've heard Sloan and her band sing her way into December before.

And actually it's not a show at all, to hear Sloan tell it -- it's a Whiz Bang!

Whatever you call what's coming up, know it will be sublime, sweet, funny, thoughtful, and joyful.

Some of us loved Sloan before we knew her musical pedigree--don't laugh, it's true. The musical dynasty of which she is a part includes Loudon Wainwright III, the late Kate McGarrigle, Rufus Wainwright, Martha Wainwright, and Lucy Wainwright Roche. Even with all that gargantuan talent in the family tree, we would ask Sloan to sing first and at the front of the stage.

With 9 CDs and thousands of tour miles under her belt, Sloan is also known for presenting in workshops -- especially those that help participants unlock their singing voices and songwriting talents. Sloan can write and sing as a soulful songwriter, or a jazz musician. She can pull up tree roots and gather in tree branches of a life that has been filled with both challenge and loss, and celebrated with great joy. We want Sloan to use her deeply resonant voice -- like a bell that is 5-feet tall -- to tell us everything.

"...an earth mother voice that she pours into unexpectedly sensitive blends of folk, jazz, blues and funk." – NYTimes

Purchase tickets on-line at the discounted price of $20 until the day of the show; $25 at the door. Doors open one-hour prior to show time. Visit the website at www.6onthesquare.org for tickets and future event information. Student tickets are always $2 with advance student reservations.

Remember to look around when you’re here: the 6OTS gallery has a new exhibit from McDonough painter Tom Gorman. These soft, often diminutive landscapes are the kind that you fall into. Tom's paintbrush creates the perception of depth, mist, and a wash of colors, with bright surprises that come when light falls just-so. This is beautiful work.

Stay well till we see you!
